Our Story

Welcome drinkers of fine ales!  We are Rush River Brewing Company of River Falls, Wisconsin, and our experienced team of brewers create craft ales that are distributed throughout Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa.  We have one over-arching goal as we head to work every day: produce the most exceptional and delicious beer available.

We specialize in unfiltered and unpasteurized ales, and this traditional method of brewing requires us to maintain our product at peak freshness.  Filtering beer strips out yeast and valuable flavor profiles, which we simply refuse to do.  We also refuse to pasteurize our ales, as everything we produce must be fresh and natural. Without pasteurization and filtering, our ale has a shorter shelf life than competing products, but it is fresher and more flavorful, capturing a breadth of hop residuals.  With a higher content of vitamins and proteins, it is healthier as well.

We create full-flavored ales that stand up and pair very well with a wide range of cuisine.  Each bottle and keg of Rush River beer maintains residual amounts of brewer’s yeast and proteins, which may produce a slightly cloudy appearance in the glass.  This contributes to a heartier mouth feel, characteristic of a naturally-brewed beer.  We aim to deliver product consistency and ingredient innovation in every one of our ales.  Please enjoy them responsibly.

“Our goal is to remain at the forefront of small batch, locally brewed ales.”

Our Master Brewer, Nick Anderson, and his partners founded Rush River in 2004 just above the confluence of Rush River and Lake Pepin in scenic Maiden Rock, Wisconsin, converting a pole barn into a fully-functioning brewery.  Initially, our team produced a limited quantity of draft-only ales, to steadily build a reputation in the Upper Midwest for brewing the highest-quality ales available.  The Unforgiven Amber Ale was the first unfiltered, craft ale we brewed. This flagship and best-selling beer represents the style of ale that we create to convey a sense that you-better-be-ready-for-this-beer and that we will not hold back on purity, taste or anything else.

Given increased demand, we opened a new and larger facility in River Falls, Wisconsin in 2007, replete with a bottling line and additional fermenters.   This allowed us to broaden our geographic reach and distribution network.  That said, we are still small and nimble, which allows us to continue to experiment with new flavors and styles.  No matter our size going forward, we will endeavor to create the best possible ales for you.

We have always tried to be at the forefront of craft ale brewing and to create beers that our customers enjoy. We are proud of our reputation as a pioneer in the Midwest, bringing quality, smooth and delicious craft ales to the region long ago.  We take this reputation very seriously, and we simply rely on our product to speak for itself!

After our humble beginnings in 2004, and a subsequent change of scenery in the craft beer market, we opened a Taproom in March of 2015, and the community of River Falls has come to appreciate its ambiance and convenience. There is simply no better place to enjoy a variety of our latest creations, including 15 taps with our year-round and seasonal beers, our specialty infusions, barrel-aged stouts and small-batch ales, pulled straight from our cool room, in a friendly and welcoming setting.  We don’t take ourselves too seriously, and we aim to create an atmosphere where folks can get together, relax and have fun!
